Artist’s Statement

My art quilts and fiber collages are mostly inspired by what I call “intellectual memories”. It’s the inner landscape that every one carries inside which consists of scraps and patches of our memory, connected in the weirdest ways. Some “still life”-s of my life, a title of a song heard in the other life and a smell of the air in the morning, on the foggy autumn day, some 20 years ago. Or Emily Dickinson’s poem which starts: “There came a day at summer’s full entirely for me;”

I try to express this half-crazy concoction bubbling inside my head using fabrics and various fibers. I found textiles to be the easiest media to work with. It’s flexible enough to let me tell the subconscious story and still preserves own identity of color and texture. I still explore and experiment with techniques – sewing, painting, bleaching, gluing and weaving the fabrics.

I know that this is my summer night with the smell of lindens and whispers of my trees on my street. But my hope is that maybe some small parts of my work will attach itself to a viewer’s own memories and recreate itself in a viewer’s own inner landscape some day.
